What is IIT JEE Main and Advanced?

There are 16 IIT’s across India and only those students who qualified JEE will be able to seek admission in any of these institutes. JEE Main and JEE Advanced are the two levels of Joint Entrance Exam, which you need to qualify for pursuing admission in IIT’s. Those who wish to take admission in IIITs, NITs, CFTIs etc., need to qualify JEEMain.


On the other hand, JEE-Advanced is the next level after qualifying JEE Main. Those who qualified JEE Main are eligible to write JEE Advanced. It helps you to seek admission in Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and the Indian School of Mine, Dhanbad. Candidates opting for JEE Main can apply for JEE Advanced as well. These are the main difference between JEE Main and Advanced. Few other differences are also mentioned at below:

JEE Main first: JEE Main can be attended by all the candidates who meets the mentioned eligibility criteria. But JEE Advanced can only be taken by those candidates who qualifies the Main exam.

JEE Advanced next: If you wish to join in any of the IIT’s and ISM, you need to score top rank in JEE Advanced. It is also mandatory that these candidates must come in the top 20 percentile of Boards in particular divisions

JEE Sections: Both JEE Main and Advanced are conducted in two parts namely Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 in JEE Main consists Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics questions. Moreover, there are also multiple choice questions available for them. On the other hand, Paper 1 in JEE Advanced have objective type questions instead of MCQ’s from the same subjects.

Medium of IIT JEE: Paper 1 of JEE Main can be taken as a Pen-paper test or online test. But, JEE Advanced does not provide any such option and it should be taken as paper based test only.

Paper 2 for B.Arch B.Plan: Only those students, who are planning to seek admission for B.Arch B.Plan programs need to take Paper 2 of JEE Main. But, those who wish to join for any Architecture and Design courses in an IIT need to attend a Design Aptitude Test later.

Number of attempts: The number of attempts for a candidate in JEE Main is 3 times in his/her lifetime. Whereas the number of attempts for a candidate in JEE Advanced is a maximum of two times in consecutive years.
